Bed Frames

What is the purpose of a bed frame?

The purpose of a bed frame is to provide a stable and supportive foundation for your mattress and to elevate it off the ground. A bed frame serves multiple functions that contribute to your overall sleeping experience and the longevity of your mattress. Firstly, it offers structural support, preventing your mattress from sagging or losing its shape over time. By providing a sturdy base, a bed frame helps distribute your body weight evenly and reduces strain on the mattress, ensuring optimal comfort and durability. Additionally, a bed frame elevates your mattress off the floor, protecting it from potential damage, moisture, and pests. This elevation also allows for improved air circulation, keeping your mattress fresh and reducing the risk of mould or mildew formation.

At Old Creamery Furniture, we offer a wide range of bed frames with various features including headboards, footboards, and side rails. These can provide a sense of style to your bedroom as well as offering support for pillows and bedding. A bed frame can also offer underbed storage options to help you maximise the space in your bedroom.

What do I need to look for when purchasing a bed frame?

If you are keeping your existing mattress, make sure you measure it and choose a bed frame that will accommodate it. If you are planning to buy a new mattress too, it’s worth considering that bigger beds tend to offer a better night’s sleep, so choose the biggest frame your bedroom space can afford. You’ll want enough room around the bed to move comfortably. It’s also important to measure the space required for any doors or drawers to open and make sure they won’t hit your bed frame.

If space is at a premium, a divan bed is a good option because the bed base is only as wide as the mattress. Many also feature built-in drawers that offer useful storage space. If you are adding a headboard, consider the amount of space you have above your bed – are there any light fittings or wall art that will restrict the height of the headboard you can have.

Bedsteads use wooden slats that support the weight of the mattress and usually provide space underneath the bed. Choose a sprung slatted base where the wooden slats are slightly curved and adapt to your position any time you move. Or opt for a solid slatted base that are slightly more rigid –ideal if you prefer to sleep on a firmer base.
